What does an Insulation Installer do?

Insulation installers fit insulation materials in buildings. They insulate walls and roof spaces, and may also fit soundproofing materials on some jobs.


Work activities

As an insulation installer, you would typically:

  • carry out a pre-installation check to work out which methods and materials to use
  • produce a written report or quote for customers
  • work out the volume of space to be filled, and the amount of insulation needed
  • install the appropriate insulation in the required areas
  • make sure that the materials and methods used meet building regulations.

You would use various tools to install materials, including hand-held electric drills, and cutting tools. You would normally be part of a team and often work from ladders and scaffolding.


Key skills and interests

To become an insulation installer, you would need:

  • the ability to follow written and spoken instructions
  • good practical skills for operating drills and other tools
  • maths skills to work out cavity space sizes and amounts of material
  • a good level of physical fitness
  • the ability to work at heights
  • good customer care skills.

Working hours and conditions

Working Hours

In a full-time job you would work standard hours, Monday to Friday. Part-time work is often available.


The job is physically demanding and you may be required to work in cramped and hot conditions, for example when laying insulation in roof spaces.

A drivers’ licence may be needed as you would travel from job to job.


How to become an Insulation Installer?

Entry Level Education

You can work as an insulation installer without qualifications. You would receive some training on the job. With some experience, you might be able to move into a supervisory role.
